Acting Lieutenant Brad Smith
Nevada Highway Patrol

Sergeant Brad Smith is currently taking on the challenges of Information Technology and Fleet while Lt. Charles Powell is serving his country in Afghanistan.

Sergeant Smith began his career as a trooper assigned to traffic operations in 1990 in the Carson Tahoe district. During his tenure as a trooper, Sergeant Smith became an accident Reconstructionist and was heavily involved in training new personnel and personal of other agencies in crash investigation. Sergeant Smith also became heavily involved in DUI detection and deterrence and is a Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) basic instructor and instructor trainer. Sergeant Smith transferred to the commercial enforcement section in 2001.

In September 2004, Smith was promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to Las Vegas urban traffic. Sergeant Smith returned to the Carson City area in September of 2006 and has worked as the commercial administrative sergeant and radio program manager. Sergeant Smith continues to serve as a department representative on the homeland security communications committee and is the chair of the state interoperability SOP committee.

Sergeant Smith is a graduate of Grand Canyon University in Phoenix Arizona and has a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Safety Administration. Sergeant Smith has received extensive specialized training in accident investigation From UTEP, University of Texas El Paso, and NUTI, Northwestern University Traffic Institute. Smith also has extensive specialized training in commercial vehicle enforcement, Crisis Intervention Stress Management, Incident Command System, DUI detection, and Policy and Procedure development.

Sergeant Smith is the father of 8 children of whom 6 are adopted, and the grandfather of two. Sergeant Smith‘s oldest son, Lance Corporal Blake Smith, is a three-year graduate from EKA In Las Vegas. He joined the Marines just after his 17th birthday and is currently deployed to Iraq where he is the youngest man in his unit.
